Lisbon Oceanarium: Visit the Biggest Aquarium in the Country

Header Oceanário de Lisboa

The Lisbon Oceanarium is the largest aquarium in the country, located next to Parque das Nações. The Oceanarium has a varied set of aquariums, thus totaling 7.5 million liters of salt water.

Oceanarium hours are from 10 am to 8 pm (with the last entry at 7 pm), with the exception of days with special hours. Regarding the ticket, it costs €19 for people aged between 13 and 64.

The visit begins, firstly, with a set of tanks, where smaller species of fish can be found. Don't be fooled: this is just a small demonstration of the (huge) number of animals found here.

Among birds, fish, mammals, invertebrates and amphibians, the Oceanarium has a huge and varied set of animals. Similarly, there are also different types of different marine plants here.

In summary, there are more than 8000 animals and plants, divided into about 500 different species. Among these species, the Moonfish stands out, considered the largest bony fish in the world and which is rarely found in aquariums.

There are also several outdoor areas, such as the sea otters and the different birds, such as penguins and the Inca tern. You can consult all the animals in the oceanarium here.

The Lisbon Oceanarium has already won the “best aquarium in the world” award by the Travelers Choice

A funny experience we had here was to see the main tank being cleaned and the animals fed. Not only did we see the responsible staff, properly equipped for their duties, feeding the animals (some of which, such as the invertebrates, were quite interesting) but we also saw them cleaning the aquariums, which caused above all a funny moment when the diver who, we thought we didn't see us, waved straight to our camera!

How to get

Being located in Parque das Nações, getting to the Aquarium is a very simple task.

In our case, we chose to first take the train to Lisboa Oriente and, from there, we took the approximately five-minute journey to the Oceanarium. This is a very simple and direct path, with no major complications in this aspect.
