The Church of Válega is also known as Igreja Matriz de Válega and Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria de Válega, and is considered by many to be the Most Beautiful Church in Portugal. This name is due to its colorful tile covering, which stands out especially when the sun beats on the front of the church – attracting the attention of everyone who passes by.
On its facade, completely adorned with hand-painted tiles, biblical moments stand out, capable of attracting the attention even of those who are not familiar with the representations. At the same time, the external side, although simpler, is also entirely tiled, being, however, only in two colors: white and blue.
However, anyone who thinks that only its external walls are worth highlighting is wrong. In addition to the tiles on the exterior, the entire interior of the Church is also painted, with the Ave Maria prayer being mainly represented. Looking up, it's impossible not to be dazzled by the ceiling, made with wood from Brazil.
All the tiles, despite having been applied at different times, were created by the company Aleluia Cerâmicas, located in the same district of Aveiro. Although the construction of the Church dates back to the 18th century, the application of tiles and stained glass was posterior, with the applications having different dates.
At the same time, it is also worth noting the stained glass windows that adorn the Church's facade and sides, a creation of a Spanish artist, stained glass windows that complement the color palette created by the tiles.
The Church of Válega becomes, therefore, a mandatory destination for anyone visiting the region. Additionally, they can visit what is considered her sister Church – the Church of Cortegaça.
