Convent of the Capuchos: Visit a corner of Sintra

Capuchos Convent is a Franciscan convent, being further away from the rest of Sintra's attractions.

Built in 1560, this building stands out, above all, for contrasting with the wealth of other great attractions, such as the Palace of Monserrate and Quinta da Regaleira.

Even more, its construction also makes it particularly interesting, as cork was used in a large part of its covering and decoration. In addition, many of the doors and windows are distinctly small, which gives the buildings a “toy house” look.

The Capuchos Convent was built in 1560 and stands out from the rest of Sintra's attractions for its simplicity, as well as its involvement with nature.

For those who decide to visit the Convent, bear in mind that the buildings are unfortunately still very degraded.

Abandoned in 1834 with the extinction of the Religious Orders, the Convent only became the property of the Portuguese State in 1949, and only later, as of 2013, did real and complex maintenance and reconstruction works begin. Consequently, you may eventually find some works on the way.

Currently, the ticket price is very nice, being €7 for an adult (you can check prices and buy tickets here.).

There is a map with the layout of the buildings (available here.) but we recommend that you make the discovery like us: through the magic of the Sintra´s Mountain, follow the paths and enter the buildings to discover everything. Additionally, there are some signs indicating points of interest.

The visit to the Convent, if made to discover and with the calm that it deserves, always takes between 1:30h and 2h, wich pass away real quick.

In addition to the various locations, there are also some landscapes, namely in places for meditation, information on more distant and higher altitude areas.

how to get there and where to park

Eu arriscaria dizer que o Convento dos Capuchos, apesar de mais isolado, foi a melhor experiência que tivemos em questão de acesso e estacionamento.

Getting to the Convent was quite simple and straightforward, despite taking longer since, in addition to being further away, it is necessary to follow more roads within Sintra´s Mountain, forcing a slower speed because of the curves.

The Convent itself has a considerably large parking lot for visitors, just a few meters from the entrance. So this will not be a problem at all.

Besides, Capuchos Convent was, by far, the destination that we visited more calmly and where there were fewer people. So, for those who prefer contact with nature and seek to avoid crowds, Convento dos Capuchos is the perfect destination in Sintra.
