Lindoso is located in Ponte da Barca, Viana do Castelo Serra do Gerês (Coordinates: 41.866844, -8.198628). Being very close to the border with Spain, the access to this village is mediumdifficulty, having accessible roads.
Its main attraction is, above all, the large set of around 60 granaries, followed by the Castle. Even so, it has several other attractions, such as the Pillory of Largo do Destro, São Mamede Church, Tornada Fountain and Alto-Lindoso Dam
Lindoso was a finalist in the 7 Maravilhas de Portugal Aldeias contest, in the category of Authentic Villages, but lost against Rio de Onor (Bragança).
Despite being a small village, possible to visit in just half a day, Lindoso is very worthwhile due to the old scenery found.
As soon as you enter the village, you immediately find the castle at the highest point of the village, and in front of it, a vast set of granaries. The castle, from the 13th century, was used for defense purposes, due to the proximity to it's neighbor, Spain.
Lindoso has one of the largest sets of granaries in the Iberian Peninsula
It is possible to enter the castle's walled area free of charge, however, it is not possible to visit the tower from the inside (at the time of our visit, in 2020, it was closed). From the castle, you can see the Alto-Lindoso Dam, which contrasts beautifully well with the landscape provided by the village.
Having visited the castle and the granaries, we suggest taking a walk around the village. In addition to the typically old streets, it feels cozy to see the old people sitting on the street talking.
After seeing the granaries the first monument found is the Pillory of Largo do Destro, a simple pillory that appears right after the granaries, seeming to demarcate the separation between them and the rest of the village.
Moving towards the village, we find the Church of São Mamede.
The winding streets lead up to a small stream (for those who go up the street) and we found a small laundry stone, which appeared to be no longer in use.
Down the streets, you can find the Tornada Fountain which, for those who visit the village on hot days, offers cold water.
Even though it is a small village, Lindoso stands out for being a very loving place, where the inhabitants are extremely friendly and welcoming.
There are still some trails around the village, but unfortunately we didn't have time to do any.
